This beautiful French castle is cheaper than the average property in London

A stunning French castle has gone on the market for less than the average property price in London - property crisis, what property crisis?

Chteau de l'Herm in Perigord, south-west France, is on the market for £417,000 - a bargain at the price.

More shockingly, however, the latest land registry figures suggest the average price of property in London is a jaw-dropping £481,820.

So, for the same price as a bog-standard London apartment, you could invest in a caste with spectacular gothic towers, stunning period features and over a hectare of land.

The castle is in a stunning part of south-west France

Not only that but Chteau de l'Herm harks back to the French Renaissance

The grounds, set in the countryside of south-west France, boast two additional smaller properties which are lived in now by the current owners.

The castle was built between 1500 and 1520 by Jean de Calvimont a member of the Bordeaux parliament and ambassador of Francis I to Spain.

The only down-side for those who work in London is the commute time from France is significantly more - with the nearest London tube being hundreds of miles away from the stunning castle.

It might be a walk to the tube, but the castle certainly has character

Marie-Franoise de Lafontaine, of Sotheby's International, said: "Chateau de l'Herm offers a rare opportunity for a buyer with a love of old buildings.

"For those who really appreciate the beauty of ancient structures and are passionate about restoring period properties this really is a once in a lifetime offering.

"The castle offers the unique opportunity to bring a piece of history back to life with their own touches. The castle really has a special place in French history with an abundance of unique sculptures and original fireplaces."

The castle has been abandoned since it was listed as a historical monument in 1927 and attracts history-buffs from all over the country.
