Faded stretch of A4 from Chiswick to Syon Lane ‘to become a Golden gateway’

Regeneration: the Golden Mile

Ambitious plans to turn a congested stretch of the A4 Great West Road studded with faded Art Deco landmarks into a thriving new gateway to London are unveiled today.

Hounslow council has drawn up the proposals for the so-called Golden Mile section of the route from Chiswick to Syon Lane in Brentford.

The stretch was built in 1925, when Brentford High Street became too clogged up, and quickly attracted companies such as Firestone Tyres, Gillette and Macleans, which built major factories in the Twenties and Thirties.

Hounslow council leader Steve Curran said: “We want to bring back the glory days to the Golden Mile, which is already home to some major companies.

New look: a multi-million pound plan to revive fortunes of the Golden Mile is planned “The route, which is on the doorstep of Europe’s busiest airport and a few miles from central London, is brimming with opportunities.” The plan identifies three major new regeneration zones, known as Kew Gate, Brentford Lock North, and Blue Sky, around the BSkyB “campus” of buildings.

Mr Curran said “a big improvement to the public transport links” would be needed. Proposed improvements include the creation of a shuttle service linking the Sky buildings to the Great Western Mainline and Crossrail, using an existing freight line.

Revival: the A4 that runs from Chiswick to Heathrow

A passenger service would also be introduced between Hounslow and Willesden Junction, calling at a new station near the new Brentford stadium.
