Nick Clegg: we are not building enough homes
Nick Clegg today risked a fresh Coalition rift by accusing the Tories of failing to understand the scale of the housing crisis in London.
“Britain needs between 250,000 and 300,000 new homes every year to meet demand. We’re not building anywhere near that,” the Lib-Dem leader was due to say in a keynote speech in the City today.
The Government had “done some good things” on housing, but needed to go “so much further”.
He said Mark Carney, the Bank of England Governor, and Christine Lagarde, head of the International Monetary Fund, had both recently warned of the threat to the economy from a housing bubble.
“Yet the Conservatives show no sign at all of understanding the enormity of the problem and the radicalism of the solution needed,” he was due to say.
A Tory source said: “Thanks to the actions by Conservatives in Government and a Conservative mayor, house building in London is at its highest rate for over 20 years.”
